Details on Treehouse
Treehouse was founded in November 2011 by Ryan Carson. Its mission is as follows:
“Our mission is to bring affordable Technology education to people everywhere, in order to help them achieve their dreams and change the world.”
Treehouse has a diverse library of training with coding topics such as PHP, Ruby on Rails, iOS development, Android development and JavaScript. There’s also content on web design, business, marketing, Photoshop and much more.
Because there are so many courses, Treehouse organizes them into what are called Tracks. These are pre-selected sequences of training topics that you complete in a specific order. Here are some examples:
- Web Design
- Rails Development
- iOS Development
- Android Development
- PHP Development
- WordPress Development
- Starting a Business
A big reason why Treehouse’s content meets such a high standard of quality is because it’s all crafted by a team of in-house expert teachers. Unlike other training websites, they don’t allow just anyone to submit a course to the library. To give you an idea of the quality of the training, here’s one of the HTML videos:

Projects and Practical Skills
Treehouse takes a project-based approach, and helps you learn the practical skills of creating real products like websites, web apps and mobile apps. Many courses are based around creating a hypothetical product, such as a bakery website, a shopping website, a future-telling app and imitations of Facebook and Snapchat.
Other courses focus on practical skills like the Git source control system, copyrighting and how to use a command line. Plus, there’s an interactive coding exercise or a quiz after every few videos, so you can immediately practice what you learn.

Career and Business Support
A big unique advantage of Treehouse is that it goes the extra mile to help you start a career or business. A section of the library is dedicated to this very area, with courses on how to establish a business and how to start a coding career.
There’s even a job board built right into the Treehouse website. This is super convenient if you’re looking for a job – or even looking to hire for your business.
Treehouse also has a discussion forum, creating a sense of community that other training websites don’t have. Become an active member of the Treehouse community and who knows what opportunities could come your way.

Cons?
The main con of Treehouse is that its library is still a work in progress. Currently, there is no training available in popular coding languages Java, C++ and Python. For a similar price, lynda.com offers a greater variety of courses.
Also, be aware that Treehouse’s training, while multi-faceted, is primarily based on videos. If you don’t like learning from videos, or your connection can’t stream them, Treehouse is not for you. A coding book may be up your alley, though.
Bottom Line
Treehouse doesn’t just teach you how to write code – it trains you to become a coder. This is crucial if your goal is to start a career or business.
If you have any questions, the best way to get them answered is to contact Treehouse directly. But hopefully you now know enough to make an informed decision on what is possibly the best coding training on the net.
