This page explains how to transfer your web page project from Codecademy to its own domain name.
But what if you don’t want to have to pay? Does that mean you have to give up? Of course not! It is possible to get a web page online without paying a cent, and this page will show you how to do it.
Use Dropbox to host your web page for free
One of the easiest ways to host a web page for free is with Dropbox. A lot of people use Dropbox to synchronize files between their devices, but not so many people realize that it can be used to host web pages too.
If you haven’t got an account with Dropbox, go and grab one (it’s free of course). When you have it installed on your computer, you’ll notice a folder labeled Public. Any file inside this folder gets its own URL which anyone around the world can access. If it’s something like a Word document, the URL will act as a download link. But if it’s an HTML document, the page will open up in anyone’s browser just like any other web page.
To host your page with Dropbox, the instructions are exactly the same as the ones on this page, only instead of saving your source files to your website server, you save them to your Public folder. The best part is that you can edit your source files whenever you want from your own computer, and they’ll update automatically.
Once your files are saved to your folder, right click them, select Dropbox > Copy Public Link and your URL will be copied to your clipboard, ready to paste into your web browser or share.
DON’T use a free hosting service
What you shouldn’t do is sign up for a free hosting service, which is a website that grants you a subdomain of their own website, where can upload your files like you would on a normal website.
Free hosting services were popular in the early days of the internet. If you Google ‘free hosting’ you’ll see there are still dozens of free hosts out there, but they’ve fallen out of use due to their poor reputation.
Restrictions on what kind of content (e.g. advertising) you can put on your site, risk of disputes and losing your data and a lot of website downtime are just some of the troubles you’ll get from using a free host. So take our advice, stay away from them and use Dropbox instead.
